Diploma Modules

SOMA offers Diploma Modules individually for all aspiring musicians out there who would love to learn a specific skill. These Diploma Modules can be taken separately or together, as and when they are available.
Students can choose their individual modules from either the Diploma in Songwriting and Production or Diploma in Music Production and Engineering, and will receive a certificate upon completing the module.

An introduction to the craft of songwriting, these 2 modules are designed to help all beginner songwriters gain an insight and build strong fundamentals into writing their own songs.

Songwriting I focuses on the creation of basic structure, rhythm, melody and the importance of repetition. As you step into Songwriting II, this highlight module will teach you the tools and techniques of writing a hit song, covering both melodic and harmonic concepts that underlie thousands of hit songs. Each week, a new technique will be taught and you will apply this technique to write an original song, and present to the class the following week.

Course Duration

12 lessons. 3 hours each lesson.

Lessons are conducted on Mondays or Wednesdays, 7 – 10pm.

Assessment Breakdown:

Weekly Assignments: 50%
Final Presentation: 40%
Tutorial Participation and Peer Assessment: 10%

Entry Requirements

Students need to be at least 17 years of age with basic knowledge in either keyboard, piano or guitar.

This project-based module covers the approaches and concepts to writing for television, film and visual media. Topics include spotting approaches, harmonic considerations, applying sound effect and scoring techniques.

6 lessons. 3 hours each lesson.

Lessons are conducted on Mondays, 7 – 10pm.

14An introduction to pop vocal arranging. This modules covers basic writing techniques such as closed and open voicings, voice-leading and writing counter-melodies suitable for backing vocals, choir and A Cappella arrangements.

Course Duration

5 lessons. 3 hours each lesson.

Lessons are conducted on mostly Mondays, 7 – 10pm.
