A Singaporean pianist and music researcher, Xiaoyun received her PhD in Music from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music under the supervision of Professor John Irving, Professor Katharine Ellis and Dr Aleksander Szram. In Australia, she pursued her Bachelor of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of music with Russian pianist, Igor Machlak. She then went on to gain her Master of Music at the Royal College of Music under the tutelage of Andrew Ball, Dina Parakhina and Patsy Toh. Before heading abroad for tertiary studies, she studied in Singapore with Ms Sylvia Tan and Boris Kraljevic at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

During her years abroad, she has had the opportunity to receive guidance from leading pianists including John O’Conor, Yulianna Avdeeva, Noriko Ogawa, Leon McCawley and Joanna MacGregor. Her competition successes include both a concerto and recital prize at the Kent International Competition, 2016. She has performed in concert venues across Australia and United Kingdom including a performance of Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 with Winchester Chamber Orchestra.

As an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), Xiaoyun lectured and designed music history and performance modules for both undergraduates and postgraduates at Trinity Laban. As a doctorate student, she served as an assistant to her supervisor, Professor John Irving. At the age of 26, Xiaoyun was invited by the Royal Northern College of Music to deliver a keynote address, Haptic Analysis: An Alternative to Score-Based Analysis at their annual conference.

With a decade worth of overseas experience in performance, research, lecturing and higher education curriculum design, Xiaoyun returns to Singapore, joining SOMA as Lecturer in Music.
